Radical Dharma Study Group
Join us every other Friday, more or less, from 7pm-8:30pm as we explore the text Radical Dharma: Talking Race, Love, and Liberation by Rev. angel Kyodo williams, Lama Rod Owens, and Jasmine Syedullah. In what ways do we (perhaps unknowingly, perhaps not) perpetuate the system of white supremacy and oppression? How do people without our privilege experience the system differently? This text asserts that when we begin to understand our own suffering, we can begin to understand that of others as well, and then compassion can begin.
“Igniting a long-overdue dialogue about how the legacy of racial injustice and white supremacy plays out in society at large and Buddhist communities in particular, this urgent call to action outlines a new dharma that takes into account the ways that racism and privilege prevent our collective awakening.”
Rev. angel Kyodo williams, an ordained Zen priest, is an author and activist. Lama Rod Owens is authorized as a lama in the Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism. Jasmine Syedullah holds a PhD in politics with a designated emphasis in feminist studies and history of consciousness from University of California, Santa Cruz.
The group plans to meet approximately every other Friday evening, with adjustments for holidays and retreats. The first three months of meetings are scheduled. After that the group will decide whether we need to make adjustments.
The group is facilitated by Patrick Goshin Ryan, with teacher liaison Genko Rainwater.
