The ancient tradition of Fusatsu has roots going back to the historical Buddha Shakyamuni and is one of the most beautiful and profound ceremonies in Soto Zen. The ceremony is an opportunity for sangha members to join together in appreciation of the Precepts. Fusatsu acknowledges the truth of suffering and allows us to confess a shortcoming before the altar. We atone for the beginningless greed, hate, and delusion, renew our practice vows, and rededicate ourselves to our intention to live in accord with our true nature. Our way of practicing with Fusatsu has been re-envisioned by the Dharma Council, and we now practice it quarterly, near solstices and equinoxes.
