An advanced class series will focus on Dogen’s Eihei Koroku. This is a compilation primarily of Dogen’s Dharma Talks during his time teaching a small number of devoted students at Eihei-ji, and is quite different in tone from the Shobogenzo, Dogen’s other main text. It consists of many short lectures or challenges, often referencing a koan or the Dharmic significance of an event. Class will be participatory and experiential. The primary goal is to cultivate the ability to absorb Dharma while weaning ourselves off of discriminatory thought. In part, this relies on close attention to tracking internal shifts in posture, sensation, emotion, thought and mind. This awareness will be nurtured with exercises, instruction and group feedback. Practice will happen for each person as they present material, as they respond to material presented, and as they debrief their experience of the encounter.
