This meeting is open to all who are interested in finding out more about the Awakening to Whiteness course that will be offered at DRZC, through our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion program, in six monthly meetings between October 2019 and April 2020.
Many Zen sanghas in the West, including Dharma Rain, have grappled with issues of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) for decades. While much has been written and said about the relative whiteness of American Zen, our country has continued to become increasingly diverse and multicultural. Taken together, these two trends pose both opportunities and challenges in our effort to ensure that the dharma is available and accessible to all.
“AWAKENING TO WHITENESS: USING THE DHARMA TO DISMANTLE OPPRESSION” is an open-source curriculum designed to help white people explore the elements that have had the effect of conditioning and distorting our perception of reality in America.
Through a carefully structured series of educational resources and spiritual practices, participants will explore historical and contemporary forces and actions that have had and continue to have harmful impacts on people of color, in the understanding that our own liberation/awakening is intimately bound to one another.
All are welcome to attend the open meeting September 15, 2019, 12:30-2:30pm to explore the process and learn more about this series. Should you then decide you would like to proceed, you will be asked to commit to attending and completing the six monthly sessions.
