Zen Teacher Reigetsu Susan Moon will lead a Friday evening and all-day Saturday retreat on The Hidden Lamp.

Reigetsu Susan Moon has been practicing in the Soto Zen tradition for 40 years, and is a lay teacher with the Everyday Zen Sangha. Her previous books include the cult classic The Life and Letters of Tofu Roshi and This is Getting Old: Zen Thoughts on Aging. For many years she edited Turning Wheel, the journal of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship. She teaches writing workshops, is a serious student of photography, and an enthusiastic grandmother. She lives in Berkeley, CA.

She is co-author, with Zenshin Florence Caplow, of The Hidden Lamp, a collection of one hundred koans and stories of Buddhist women from the time of the Buddha to the present day. This revolutionary book brings together many teaching stories that were hidden for centuries, unfamiliar to American readers until this volume. These stories are extraordinary expressions of freedom and fearlessness, relevant for men and women of any time or place. These stories — poetic, irreverent, and sometimes very funny — are extraordinary expressions of freedom and fearlessness, relevant for men and women of any time or place. The women in this book are the ancestors of every contemporary Buddhist. In these pages we meet wives, nuns, queens, and servants, as well as contemporary women teachers who respond to the stories.

In a safe and supportive setting, we’ll meet each other, too, and we’ll meet ourselves in the mirror of these old stories of awakening. We’ll sit in silence together, walk and talk and play and do some informal writing exercises. We’ll certainly laugh, we’ll probably cry, and we’ll appreciate the wisdom and courage inherent in our own lives. Everyone is welcome.

There will be a Friday evening workshop from 7-9pm and a Saturday daylong retreat from 9:30am-5pm. Limited to 24 participants.
