Dogen Workshop

The poetic writings of ancestor Eihei Dogen (1200-1250) permeate Zen training, from our daily Fukanzazengi to the celebrated Genjo Koan where he says “to study the self is to forget the self.” When Westerners encounter his prose however, they often struggle with both a sense of haunting recognition of truth and incredible frustration with images and expression that does not lend itself to ready understanding. This workshop is geared for those on the Zen path who want to take a second look at how to approach Dogen and what he has to offer in that way of inspiration, encouragement and a different way of knowing through the play of emancipated language.
In this workshop, we’ll practice Dogen’s zazen, engage copying exercises with a classic text, and learn about some of the major themes Dogen repeatedly touches upon in his communication.
The date of this retreat leads into Founder’s Day where we celebrate the originators of the temple by sitting through the night and commemorating the dedication of our founders on Sunday morning. Participants are encouraged to consider partaking of this memorial sitting that resonates with the compassion of Dogen to his students and his wish for authentic practice for all.
