The third series of Awakening to Whiteness will begin on June 23 and run about once a month until November 3. This series focuses on awareness about the effects of whiteness both systemically and individually and provides tools and education. The series covers six different topics, ranging from Historical and Systemic Racism; History of Race in Portland, Oregon, and the Northwest; and Applying our Buddhist Practice. It will be organized into listening cohorts that will remain the same throughout the series. Expect about 2-4 hours of reading and engaging with materials outside of the meetings.
The series focuses on whiteness and its effects as a racial category, but anyone interested is welcome to join, regardless of race or background. It is meant as an informational and introductory series – no background knowledge or experience necessary. People who hold leadership positions in the sangha are especially encouraged to participate.
All meetings will be held on Thursdays from 7-9pm, in person (starting in Uji then breaking up into individual groups meeting in other areas). Attendance is required for each of the six meetings so as to support cohort development. The series will be co-facilitated by Reiju and Gabe Fields.
The orientation will include a sample agenda, an article that links this work to our Buddhist practice, and an opportunity to ask questions of the facilitators. The orientation isn’t binding; you can come to the orientation without attending the series. You can also attend the series without attending the orientation. It’s meant as an informational session.
