Uekiya: The Zen Mind of the Organic Gardener
8500 NE Siskiyou St
Portland, OR 97220
USA
Does my garden have buddhanature? How are the simple acts of planting corn, weeding purslane, composting old husks of food, Zen practice? To take up the life of the gardener is to look directly into the meaning of Buddhist emptiness – constant change and countless interrelationships working together. While we gardeners are naturally seduced by glossy seed catalogs with rich ripe tomatoes and succulent celery in perfect rows, ultimately, the gardener is the one who is gardened through the interplay of being and doing. You are the fruit of your garden.
For experienced and aspiring gardeners both, come join us this day for a mix of activities – Zen teaching, meditation, and interaction with the burgeoning Siskyou ecology. The workshop, led by Seido Martin, DRZC lay teacher and organic farmer of 25 years. Please dress for all weather conditions. Beginners to Zen practice welcome. Feel free to bring seeds to share with participants at the end of the day.
