Awakening to Whiteness
Join us for the second series on Awakening to Whiteness. In this program, we’ll be doing readings, listening to music and podcasts, and watching videos that help us better understand whiteness and our society that is structured on whiteness. Participants will learn to ground themselves in compassionate awareness as they seek to see themselves more clearly by learning about the history and implications of whiteness. Topics include How Whiteness Developed, A Historical and Structural Examination of Race, Portland and Oregon History, White Privilege, Applying our Spiritual Practice, and Continued Work.
We will meet once a month for six months, on the fourth Sunday from 4-6pm. Materials and an agenda will be supplied before each meeting, and you will engage and journal about them on your own. We expect a minimum of two hours spent with the materials per month, but we strongly encourage more time for journaling, re-reading/listening/watching, as the materials are rich. During meetings, you’ll share your responses to materials with a cohort. Ko’in and Reiju facilitate and the group is hosted by the DEI Committee. People of all races and backgrounds are welcome and everyone is encouraged to attend whether or not you have any prior experience working with race and whiteness. An orientation and informational meeting will occur on December 20, and registration will close on January 4.
