Five Ranks Study Group

The Five Ranks or Five Positions is a subtle, intimate and challenging teaching first described by Dongshan (Tozan) in China. It is one theme of “The Most Excellent Mirror Samadhi” and has become an important part of Zen tradition. The Five Ranks describe the changing nature of our relationship to awakening; it provides a way to reflect on the integration of the relative and the Absolute in our lives. Tozan wrote two sets of poems to describe the Five Ranks. A senior study group will examine the two poem cycles and our own experience of awakening. The group is geared toward senior members who have already taken the Precepts classes and will be a shared study group rather than a lecture series. (No text is required.) Facilitated by Jiko.
